Date: 2013-10-19 10:01 am (UTC)When the M16 was first introduced by Colt in the early 1960's there was much hype about the rifle being self-cleaning and requiring little operator maintenance. I was in Vietnam in 1967/68 and do not recall any instructions being given that the rifle was self-cleaning.
I believe a couple indicators should be mentioned about self-cleaning. For nearly 100 years prior to the adoption of the M16 American troops had a rifle in which cleaning gear was stowed in the buttstock. The M16, however, was designed with a buttstock that had a full rubber buttplate with no provision for storing cleaning gear. That indicates that Eugene Stoner, Armalite, and Colt did not view regular cleaning of the rifle as a necessity and marketed the rifle accordingly. That is the source of the myth that the M16 was self-cleaning.
The M11 rod was essentially the same cleaning rod Colt sold commercially with the AR-15, but it was in short supply in Vietnam. This rod had two sections each approximately 10 inches in length, one of which had a knurled end to serve as a handle, and one section approximately 8 inches in length to which a bore brush could be installed. This first type pouch had no provision for carrying bore cleaner, lubricant, or cleaning patches. This arrangement substantiates that the promoters of the M16 rifle viewed cleaning as an infrequent necessity.
