3. All divisions were acting as separate units, and were vectored out at 310 - 320 degrees. The enemy bombers were contacted at from twenty to forty miles away from Midway Islands. I saw two waves consisting of approximately forty dive bombers each. These two waves had been attacked by friendly fighters before I made sight contact with them. All divisions attacked these dive bombers. All pilots who returned did not claim any victories that they were not absolutely certain of. According to all reliable sources, one for example, Captain M. A. Tyler of VMSB-241, who was on Midway Islands during the entire attack, not more than eighteen dive bombers reached the entire area. I, personally, saw at least eighty dive bombers thirty miles away, heading towards Midway. I thereby claim at least fifty enemy dive bombers, Aichi Type 99, for the VMF-221 squadron, plus an undisclosed number of 00 Fighters.

3. There follows a summary of damage inflicted on the enemy by the forces operating from the Naval Air Station, Midway Island.
* 53 aircraft destroyed.
**14 aircraft damaged.
* This includes reports of surviving personnel and probable victories of missing fighter pilots. This also includes ten (10) aircraft shot down by antiaircraft fire of Sixth Defense Battalion.
**This includes two (2) aircraft damaged by antiaircraft fire of Sixth Defense Battalion.

Date: 2012-12-01 11:26 am (UTC)
CLAIMED VICTORIES - 9 SURVIVING PILOTS
(No statements from 2 wounded pilots)
00 1 Sento KI Fighters - 3 plus 1 damaged.
Aichi Type 99 Navy Dive Bomber - 8 plus 3 damaged.
The above victories do not include planes shot down by VMF-221's missing pilots, so it is safe to assume a like performance for 16 missing or wounded pilots, i.e: 15 bombers and 5 fighters; making the total victories of VMF-221, 23 bombers and 8 fighters, not including damaged planes. This estimate is further borne out by the difference in number of bombers observed at the scene of conflict and the total number of bombs dropped on Midway Islands.
